Cloud Technologies

Past and Present of Cloud Technologies

The concept of cloud technologies began to take shape in parallel with the emergence of the Internet, despite the fact that the very definition of this concept did not yet exist. Today, cloud services have become used in almost all areas of human activity and ensure the effective management of both business and various projects. Unlike the recent past, no one now doesn`t think that cloud technologies and the Internet are the same things.

After all, the cloud is nothing more than a way to store data, carry out calculations, build various models with control of remote devices, etc. The cloud is divided into virtual servers with different power and capacity. Each server has its own computing resources: processor, RAM and storage, all the power of which is combined using a special program – a hypervisor. Thanks to this infrastructure the cloud appears and with its help, companies like launch user`s blockchain infrastructures.

A look into the past

So, it has become obvious that the use of cloud resources greatly simplifies our lives. At the same time, it must be admitted that this process has become so workaday that no one even thinks about the fact that the cloud, cloud computing, and other cloud components entered our lives relatively recently. Although it should be noted that the starting point for today’s cloud technologies were the ideas of Joseph Licklider, voiced half a century ago.

Licklider’s ideas evolved into the concept that all people would be connected to a single global network, and this network would become their provider of any necessary information or program. This concept has expanded and been supplemented with the general development of Internet technologies. At the same time, the development of cloud technologies themselves did not occur without problems.

For example, one of the obstacles on his way was the weak Internet bandwidth. And only after the Internet was accelerated in the 90s of the last century, cloud technologies began to develop much faster. Within 10 years, this development led to the first emergence of a process called SaaS (software as a service).

And finally, in the early 2000s, it was launched the first cloud service, which provided users with the opportunity not only to store information and carry out the necessary calculations, but also to run their own applications. The further rapid development of cloud technologies gave rise to PaaS (platform as a service), and then IaaS (infrastructure as a service).

Cloud resources today

Today hardware continues to evolve – multi-core processors are being created, storage capacity is increasing, and software for virtualization technology is appearing. All this contributes to the further development of cloud technologies and ensuring their greater availability.

For example, the area of acquisition and use of cloud resources has now significantly expanded, because this has turned out to be the most optimal and most profitable solution for almost all categories of business – from large companies to small startups and projects.

There are three cloud deployment models: public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud. Each deployment option has its own characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses that users need to consider when planning their infrastructure and making decisions. Due to the fact that deployment models are quite flexible, users can choose not only the best option for themselves, but also, if necessary, combine different approaches. The main considerations here are security, scaling and maintenance requirements, as well as the available budget.

Experts predict that the development of cloud technologies will continue at an accelerated pace, since the main difficulties have already been overcome in the past. Obviously, such a network achievement is beneficial both to specialists who work in this field and to consumers. Cloud service providers and technology providers, receiving income from their activities, generate further promotion and development of cloud resources and services.

In turn, opportunities open up for consumers to strengthen business processes, optimize costs and significantly reduce unproductive costs. And not only businesses are interested in using cloud technologies. Ordinary users today also constantly use cloud services. Storing photos and various data, booking tickets via the Internet, communicating on social networks, etc. – all this often happens thanks to cloud services.

Figuratively speaking, cloud technologies are a new way of managing IT resources, the next stage after data centers. Another undoubted advantage of cloud services is almost instantaneous responses to user requests. Of course, this is a new level of interaction between users and IT technologies.
