Theme: The Power Of Translation

The Power Of Translation

Here at Free Word, we believe that translation opens borders and enriches our understanding of other cultures. London is a city in which over 300 languages are spoken and where, for half of our state school students, English is not their first language. The world is filled with inspiring works of literature, but in the UK only a tiny percentage of literature is in translation.

We set up The Power of Translation to tackle these issues. Our programme supports the work of literary translators, sending them into schools and communities to work across languages such as Turkish, Polish, French, Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese and many others. We encourage translators to find new ways of introducing other cultures, literature and politics to a wider audience, from curating exhibitions to commissioning new work. There is also a fantastic library of translated fiction for you to enjoy here at Free Word Centre.

As part of this programme, we created Wanderlust: Great Literature from Around the World. On the second Monday of each month, we invite international writers and translators to attend Wanderlust and discuss their work. Our Multilingual Creativity Series with King’s College London seeks to address the question “what happens when people use more than one language at once in a creative project?” We have also welcomed several Translators in Residence to Free Word who have enriched both our live events and our digital content within the area of translation.
