Performance Poetry and Spoken Word: A History

Past Event

An investigation into the last great underground art form, featuring previously unseen archive material and guest appearances by Kayo Chingonyi, Joelle Taylor, Roger Robinson, Tim Wells, Rob Auton and others.

Whilst probing their archives, the performance poetry pioneers Apples and Snakes have unearthed a wealth of historical flyers, recordings and photos that tell the story of this curiously elusive art form.

This 8-week short course – each week featuring a different guest poet – traces the journey from Allen Ginsberg to Kate Tempest, using the A&S archive as a guide. Dub, ranting, rap, slam, comedy, solo shows and happenings – it’s all here.

There will also be writing exercises from some of the most experienced poets on the circuit: Joelle Taylor, Kayo Chingonyi, Roger Robinson, Lucy English, Tim Wells, Rob Auton and more to be confirmed.

Please note: this course will run weekly, every Friday, from 27 October – 15 December.

Russell Thompson (Archive Coordinator, Apples and Snakes) plus special guests.
