Following on from the success of previously sold-out Writers’ Days, The Literary Consultancy brings this event back to the literary calendar on Saturday June 23rd at Free Word.
With special industry guests in a full-day programme, for writers wanting to know more about how best to navigate the changing literary landscapes of writing, editing and publishing.
Writers’ Day 2018 Programme
10am-10.30am: Registration (tea and coffee)
10.30am-10.45am: Introduction by TLC Director Aki Schilz
10.45am-11.45am: Building an Author Platform: Let’s Get Visible with Sunday Times Bestselling author Angela Clarke
It’s essential an author understands how to maximise their visibility, however they plan to publish their work. In this dynamic talk, Angela Clarke will give practical guidance from tried and tested strategies to help build a platform for you, and for your writing.
11.45am-12.45pm: Negotiating Relationships: From Draft to Bookshelf with novelist Guy Gunaratne (In Our Mad and Furious City), and editor Mary-Anne Harrington (Tinder Press, Headline)
A discussion between a novelist and his editor on the journey a book takes from submission at a publishing house to publication, looking at how the writer fits into the network of relationships that bring books to readers.
12.45pm – 1.30pm: Lunch (buffet style lunch provided)

1.50pm-2.30pm: TLC Pen Factor live pitches with industry judges
2.30pm-3.30pm: Who Dares Wins: Take Risks and Supercharge your Writing with Shelley Harris
The most exhilarating work often comes when we let go and give ourselves permission to take risks. In this practical, fun workshop, acclaimed novelist Shelley will take you through some ways to approach the blank page in a spirit of derring-do.
Announcement of the Winner of the TLC Pen Factor Writing Competition
All Writers’ Day 2018 ticket-holders will be eligible to enter their unpublished writing into the TLC Pen Factor Writing Competition. Previous winners and shortlisted writers have gone on to be shortlisted for the Costa Prize (Guinevere Glasfurd, TLC Pen Factor 2014, The Words In My Hand), longlisted for the OCM Bocas (Fawzia Kane, TLC Pen Factor 2012, Tantie Diablesse) and selected as WH Smith Fresh Pick (Piers Alexander, TLC Pen Factor 2013, The Bitter Trade). Five finalists will be selected to live-pitch on the day.
